ADHD in Children — What It Really Looks Like and What Parents Can Do

A child who cannot sit still. Who interrupts constantly. Who forgets instructions the moment they are given. Who the teacher describes as "disruptive."

This child is often labelled naughty, lazy, or difficult. They are often none of those things. They may have ADHD.

What Is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition in which the brain's ability to regulate focus, impulse control, and activity levels works differently. It is not a result of poor parenting. It is not something a child will simply grow out of.

Three Types of ADHD

  • Hyperactive: cannot sit still, talks non-stop, acts before thinking

  • Inattentive: daydreams, forgets instructions, loses things, struggles to complete tasks

  • Combined: a mix of both — the most common type seen in classrooms

Common Signs in Children

  • Extreme difficulty sitting still for more than a few minutes

  • Interrupting others constantly during conversation or class

  • Losing things regularly — books, bags, homework

  • Strong emotional reactions to small events

  • Difficulty transitioning from one activity to another

What Helps

ADHD responds well to structured support — shorter tasks, visual schedules, movement breaks, and consistent routines. The right environment and the right support make an enormous difference.
