Early Signs of Autism in Toddlers — What Every Parent Should Know

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone. When something feels different — your toddler is not responding to their name, not making eye contact, or not meeting milestones — that instinct deserves attention.

What Is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child communicates and experiences the world. It is not caused by vaccines, parenting, or diet. Every autistic child is different.

Early Signs to Watch For

  • Not responding to their name by 12 months
  • Avoiding eye contact with people
  • No babbling or pointing by 12 months
  • Few or no words by 16 months
  • Lining up toys, strong distress when routines change
  • Very sensitive to sounds, lights, or textures

Why Early Action Matters

Children who receive structured support between ages 2 and 5 make significantly more progress than those who start later. The brain is most adaptable during these years. Early intervention is not about changing your child — it is about giving them every possible tool to grow.
